Acadia is several places, not one loop road

Bar Harbor is the best-known gateway, but it is not the only useful base. Southwest Harbor and Winter Harbor can support quieter itineraries with less repeated driving.

A balanced three-day Acadia itinerary

Day 1: Park Loop Road and one east-side trail

Start early and combine Sand Beach, the Ocean Path corridor, a designated stop near Thunder Hole, and Jordan Pond. Choose one hike that matches the group. Great Head offers coastal views, while Beehive and Precipice involve exposure and iron rungs and are not ordinary walking trails.

Day 2: Carriage roads and the west side

Walk or bike a carriage-road section, then continue toward Echo Lake, Somes Sound, or a western mountain trail. This creates a different day from the granite-and-ocean loop.

Day 3: Schoodic Peninsula or a flexible summit day

Drive to Schoodic for ocean ledges, short trails, and a quieter park district. If weather hid the mountains earlier, keep this day flexible for Cadillac or another summit. Cadillac sunrise is famous, but late-day light and clear weather can be more rewarding than a cloudy reservation slot.

Cadillac Summit Road reservations in 2026

A $6 vehicle reservation is required to drive Cadillac Summit Road from May 20 through October 25, 2026. The reservation is separate from the park entrance pass and is sold online in advance through Recreation.gov.

Reservations are per vehicle. They provide a timed entry but do not assign a parking space or allow re-entry. You do not need the road reservation to enter other parts of Acadia, or to reach the summit by foot, bicycle, or taxi. A park entrance pass is still required.

Inventory is released in advance and in a later rolling window. Read the official page for the current release percentages and timing before setting an alarm, since booking rules can change.

Trails, carriage roads, and visiting with a dog

Acadia's official park description lists 158 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage roads. The range is unusually broad for a compact park, from level carriage-road walks to steep granite routes built with stone steps and iron rungs.

Dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet are welcome on about 100 miles of trails and all 45 miles of carriage roads. Pets are prohibited on ladder trails and other named routes, and beach access changes seasonally. A dog-friendly park is not a promise that every trail is suitable.

For a first hike, choose based on exposure, footing, elevation gain, and parking, not only mileage. Ocean Path and many carriage-road segments are approachable. Beehive and Precipice require comfort with height and close attention to one-way travel, closures, and weather.

Campgrounds and the Island Explorer

Acadia has four official campgrounds:

• Blackwoods: wooded sites on the east side of Mount Desert Island, close to the Park Loop Road.
• Seawall: west-side camping near Southwest Harbor and the coastline.
• Schoodic Woods: a newer campground on Schoodic Peninsula.
• Duck Harbor: five remote lean-to sites on Isle au Haut, reached without a car.

Reserve through the official links and confirm operating seasons. The fare-free Island Explorer bus network connects many Mount Desert Island locations during its operating season and can reduce parking stress. Route dates, bicycle capacity, pet rules, and final service times need to be checked before relying on it.

Best season, entrance fees, and the final check

Summer offers the broadest services and the largest crowds. Early fall brings cooler hiking and foliage, with very busy peak-color weekends. Spring is quieter but can be wet, muddy, and limited by seasonal openings. Winter turns Acadia into a self-reliant trip with closed roads and reduced facilities.

The current standard private-vehicle entrance fee in official data is $35 for seven days. Acadia is on the 2026 list of parks with a $100 per-person nonresident fee for visitors age 16 and older unless admitted with a qualifying pass.
